Attorney denies fraud charges
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The law firm representing arrested attorney Jade Hollis says that she has denied the charges made against her and that she had given the police details of her planned trip abroad, including her date and time of return.
Yesterday, the police information arm, the Corporate Communications Unit, had reported that 47-year-old Hollis was taken into custody at the Norman Manley International Airport upon her return to the island about 12:30 pm, following a decision by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The police said they charged Hollis with four counts of fraudulent conversion in relation to a real estate transaction involving more than $12 million.
However, today, attorney Jacqueline Samuels-Brown of Firmlaw said Hollis, who had gone abroad for medical treatment including major surgery, voluntarily returned to Jamaica yesterday, having first informed the police of her intention to do so and providing them with details, including airline, flight number and time of arrival.
Samuels-Brown said Hollis’ first priority is to attend to legal matters now before the court, including the charges initiated against her and the claim that she has filed in the Supreme Court against the complainant on whose allegations she was arrested.
Samuels-Brown added that Hollis had filed her case in the Supreme Court before the institution of the charges against her on the allegations of the complainant.
“The Supreme Court has appointed an independent accountant to review all relevant accounting records and Ms Hollis has been in full compliance with the court’s order providing all the material required,” Samuels-Brown said, adding that her client “will continue to give full co-operation and compliance with the court and other lawful authority”.
Hollis is to appear before the Half-Way-Tree Resident Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, May 13, 2015. Her bail has been set at $3 million with surety.
