Cops in schoolgirl murder return to court today
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The three cops implicated in the murder of 16-year-old Vanessa Kirkland will return to court today.
Durvin Haye, Anna Kay Bailey and Andrewair Smith were arrested and charged for murder and wounding with intent in May following investigations by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM).
Kirkland, a student of Immaculate Conception High School, was shot and killed at a birthday party on Norman Road, Kingston 13.
Six others were shot and injured in the incident.
Reports are that the incident started in Portmore, St Catherine where someone was reportedly assaulted and robbed of a cell phone.
The perpetrators allegedly sped off in a blue Suzuki Swift motor car.
The incident was broadcast over the police radio and what appeared to be the same car was spotted along Washington Boulevard shortly afterwards. It was followed by police to Norman Lane were the car was allegedly shot up with its seven occupants.
Eyewitnesses say police opened fired on the car before the occupants had a chance to get out.
Kirkland was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The Director of Public Prosecutions recommended that the matter be committed directly to the Home Circuit Court.
