Police youth clubs stage sports day July 25
ST Catherine, Jamaica (JIS) – Fifteen police youth clubs in the St Catherine South Division will on Saturday July 25, come together to host a sports day and stage show in Portmore, to strengthen the partnership between the communities in the area and the police.
The event, to be held at the Waterford High School, will feature netball and football competitions, rides for children, and a stage show with musical performances in the evening. The day’s activities get underway at 9:00 a.m.
Head of the Police Youth Club movement, Corporal Windell Reid, said the event is in line with efforts by the police to restore trust and confidence within different areas, as well as to rebuild the relationship with certain communities.
Corporal Reid said the Police Youth Club movement is on a mission to stabilise and mentor at-risk youth, through involvement in a variety of educational and social activities, as well as leadership workshops and training.
The fun day, although centred in Waterford, is expected to bring together youth from several other communities in which the youth clubs operate, including Greater Portmore, Gregory Park, Hellshire, Old Harbour and Central Village.
Corporal Micky Lord, one of the organisers, explained to JIS News that Waterford is considered a hotspot area for criminal activity and it is important that members of the community are assured that the police are on board to partner with them in solving whatever safety concerns they have.
“So, the event is to pull police to the space, pull the community to the space and have that partnership,” he said.
