Slow voting in St Elizabeth
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth – It was all quiet up to early afternoon in St Elizabeth as Jamaicans voted for their parish council representatives.
Reports from across the parish suggested very slow voting and polling stations visited by the Observer in sections of south-east and north-east St Elizabeth appeared to confirm that trend. In some cases election workers appeared to far outnumber voters.
Police in early afternoon were reporting no election-related incidents.
“So far so good, no incidents,” said Deputy Superintendent Lanford Salmon of the St Elizabeth police, “The voter turn out is very low and it just seems like people are behaving as normal,” he added.
As a direct result of schools being closed for the day, traffic was unusually light in early morning but by mid to late morning it had built up in town centres such as Santa Cruz as people went about their business.
