Jamaica adds six more medals to Carifta tally
LEADERS Jamaica added another six medals including a gold from three finals that were completed on this morning’s fifth and penultimate session of the 41st Lime CARIFTA games at the Bermuda national stadium.
Ashinia Miller retained his Under 20 boys shot put title with a throw of 18.96m while Nigerian born Emmanuel Onyia started his career for Jamaica with a silver-18.89m.
Janieve Russell, who won gold in the 400m hurdles on Sunday, added a silver in the Under 20 girls long jump behind Barbados’ Akela Jones while another Jamaican Claudette Allen was third.
Samara Spencer took silver in the Under 17 long jump, her second medal of the championships while Tamara Moncrieffe won the bronze, also her second medal of the weekend.
At the end of the session Jamaica extended their medal tally to 58 including 27 gold, 17 silver and 14 bronze medal and look well set to pass the 66 medals won last year in Montego Bay.
Jamaica has qualified in almost all the finals set for this afternoon’s final session with six 200m runners with the exception of Jevaughn Minzie advancing.
Munro College’s Delano Williams who is the defending champion, advanced with the fastest time of 21.14 seconds.
Odail Todd who was third in the Under 20 boys last year, advanced as one of the fastest losers with the eighth overall time while Shericka Jackson was third overall behind the two Bahamians, defending champion Antonique Strachan and IAAF World Junior 400m champion Shaunae Miller.
Defending champion Stephan Fennel and Yannick Hart are the two fastest qualifiers in Under 20 boys 110m hurdles.
