El Clasico preview
El Clasico is back again this weekend however not with the same build up and anticipation as previous encounters between Spain’s biggest rivals. With a ten point gap between the two clubs many believe that the race for the title is already over. If Barcelona wins at the Camp Nou this weekend it will all but confirm that assumption. However, the focus on this El Clasico will be centred around the death of Barca club legend and pioneer Johan Cruyff who recently passed away due to lung cancer.
Cruyff’s playing and managerial stints at the Spanish club revolutionized the sport itself and paved the way for a playing style that would be replicated and envied by many clubs around the world. It was Cruyff who built the famous Barcelona ‘dream team’ of the 90’s which brought so much success to the club. Cruyff was also instrumental in creating the pathway for the likes of Messi, Puyol, Guardiola, Rijkaard, Deco and so much more to play for the club in a style distinct in its own right. Without his vision and intelligence the club would not be where it is today.
The significance of the match this weekend is that Barcelona would see an El Clasico win as a fitting tribute to the man that helped them to be the club they are today. No doubt Cruyff would love to see his beloved Barcelona get on up on their eternal rivals who at this stage have already conceded defeat in the title race. It will be a matter of pride for Madrid but given the added motivation plus home advantage not many would bet against a Barcelona victory.
