All members in place for MoBay city council
Montego Bay — All 16 members of the Montego Bay City Council have now been identified and in keeping with its thrust to begin by tackling solid waste management, they plan to stage a massive cleanup of the city this month.
The work will be done with the help of the Urban Development Corporation, the Fisheries Division of the agriculture ministry, and the Marine Park as well as cadets and youth service workers.
According to secretary manager for the St James Parish Council, Christopher Powell, the cleanup will not cost the city any additional funds because of the use of volunteers and the already established services. Western Parks and Markets, he said, will provide the trucks to cart away the debris collected from the cleanup campaign.
In addition to the 11 councillors whose divisions fall within the city limits, the City Council is made up of a representative from the local arm of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association, a representative from the Chamber of Commerce, as well as members of the Social Development Commission.
Hotelier Godfrey Dyer represents the JHTA; Stephen Dear sits on the Council on behalf of the Chamber and the SDC members will rotate.
The Council plans to concentrate on one topic at a time and after the cleanup of the city its next project will be to work on raising the literacy rate within the western city.
The next meeting of the City Council is scheduled for April 25 at the St James Parish Council.
