Mobay woman fined $70,000 for ganja
Western Bureau: A 21-year-old Montego Bay resident was this week fined close to $70,000 and sentenced to two months behind bars for trying to export ganja to Curacao.
The accused, Kingsley Morris, who resides at Rose Heights in the western city, was stopped at the Sangster International Airport’s security check point where seven and a half pounds of the illegal substance was found inside his flight pack.
He was subsequently charged with possession of, dealing in and attempting to export ganja.
In court Wednesday, Morris pleaded guilty to the charges against him but told the court that the ganja did not belong to him and he was unaware that it was inside his flight pack.
However, R M Valerie Stephens bluntly told him that she did not believe his explanation.
For possession of the contraband, Morris was fined $11,200 or three months. For dealing in it he was fined another $22,400 or three months. And for attempting to export it, he was fined an additional $33,600 or three months and sentenced to two months behind bars.
He will serve 11 months in prison if the fines are not paid.
