Large turnout for Palisadoes beach clean-up
Despite two postponements as a result of bad weather, nearly 300 persons turned up for the Jamaica Environment Trust’s annual beach clean-up exercise to rid the Palisadoes strip of unsightly debris.
The clean-up exercise was held on October 26.
Among the many volunteers were the newly appointed British High Commissioner, Peter Mathers and Miss Jamaica World 2002, Danielle O’Hayon.
As in previous years, the most common item found was PET plastic bottles. A total of 11,528 of these bottles were collected with the Ardenne High School Environment team alone collecting 2,671. Other items collected includes cans, glass bottles, animal skulls, dead animals, clocks, igloos, sponges and a toilet. A total of 347 bags of garbage were collected by the Metropolitan Parks and Markets. Approximately five kilometres of the Palisadoes strip was cleaned of debris.
The waste collected was recorded and sent to the Ocean Conservancy Office in Washington DC, for their annual report on beach debris worldwide.
