Portmore in for a ‘Caribbean Christmas’
PORTMORE residents are in for a “Caribbean Christmas” as Portmore Missionary Church stages its Christmas production of the same name on December 26, 27 and 28 at 6:30 pm nightly on the grounds of the church.
The show, which features the group Father HoLung and Friends, will make use of music from the Caribbean Christmas CD that was released in early November by Father Richard HoLung of Missionaries of the Poor. The music is being performed in concert for the first time at the Portmore Missionary Church. Music from the Caribbean Christmas CD was written by Father HoLung and features longtime performers with the group such as Darcy Tulloch Williams, Wynton Williams, William Adamson, Lystra Thames, Michelle Aquart, Leroy Palmer Andrew Lawrence, Dimario McDowell, among others, with arrangements by Jon Williams, who is known for his work with Jamaican music and particularly with Father Richard HoLung.
The Christmas production is being dubbed a celebration of music, dance and drama and is being co-ordinated by the retired creative arts director of the Phillip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, Jean Small.
In addition to the music of Father HoLung and friends, “Caribbean Christmas” will showcase Kulcha, which is a 15-member choral speaking group, as well as drumming, drama, song and dance from the Portmore Missionary Prep School.
“We believe that Portmore is especially in need of good quality family entertainment and we are really delighted to stage this kind of event in the community,” said Rev Garnet Roper, the pastor of the Portmore Missionary Church.
“We are heartened by the response of the community so far as we have had the support of a number of corporate sponsors without whom the event would not have been possible,” he added.
