Sav family grieves over suicide of 21 year-old relative
THE apparent suicide Saturday of David Brooks, who was found hanging, has taken a pale of gloom over the town of Savanna-la-Mar, the Westmoreland capital.
The body was found hanging in a doorway by one of his sisters at about 9:00 Saturday morning who had gone to check on him.
The death of the 21 year-old has shocked members of his family, who said it remained a mystery as relatives try to ascertain why one of their own would take his own life.
Brooks, who resided at 4 Great George St in Savanna-la-Mar, and who was attending CXC classes, was said to be suffering from depression for the past four years.
According to the Savanna-la-Mar police a man, Donald Johnson, who shares the apartment with the deceased, saw and spoke to Brooks at about 3:00 am Saturday and then left the house. At about 9:00 am, a sister of the deceased, Sonia Brooks went to the room to see her brother and found the door locked. After calling him and not receiving an answer the door was forced open and there she made the gruesome discovery. The body of her brother was hanging by a television cable wire at the entrance to one of the bedrooms.
The Savanna-la-Mar CIB said they have ruled out foul play as it was a case of suspected suicide.
The young man’s aunt, Peggy Brooks was overcome with grief as she tried to come to terms with the death of her nephew, who she said was of a quiet nature.
“He mentioned that he had a problem the other day but he sounded as if he was over it,” she told the Observer. “He was just his usual quiet self,” she continued. “When I left him yesterday (Friday) upstairs he did not seem anyway different. He was just looking a bit pale,” she said.
