Sav police crack $30-m car stealing ring
THE Savanna-la-Mar CIB has cracked what they believe to be a $30-million car stealing ring which snatched 15 high-end vehicles from three parishes across western parishes.
During the operation, which spanned Wednesday and Thursday, two persons were arrested but their names are being withheld pending further investigations and the formal laying of charges.
According to the police’s information officer for Negril, Constable Damion Ricketts, a 1999 burgundy Mitsubishi Montero Sport motor vehicle — which was reportedly stolen in Kingston about three weeks ago — was first spotted along the West End Road in Negril. Lawmen were alerted, and at about 8:00 pm that night the vehicle was intercepted and subsequently seized in the same vicinity.
This seizure led to the recovery of four other Montero Sports, one Mitsubishi Challenger, two Toyota Harriers, three Mitsubishi Surf, one Toyota Tundra pick-up truck and three Toyota Corolla motorcars.
Two of the vehicles were seized in Montego Bay, St James; three in Lucea, Hanover; three in Frome, Westmoreland and seven in the Negril area of that parish. The vehicles are being stored in the police divisions in which they were recovered.
“Persons who have lost their vehicles through theft are asked to contact the Savanna-la-mar police station with proper identification,” said Constable Ricketts.
According to Observer sources, the arrested individuals have claimed that the vehicles were legitimately purchased from an individual who said they were purchased at an auction.
