Murder suspect to face ID parade
WESTERN BUREAU — A deportee, who is suspected of murdering at least two people in St James, was on Thursday slapped with several charges, ranging from illegal possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of more than $1 million in Jamaican and US currency.
The deportee, whose name is being withheld pending an identification parade, is likely to face a number of other charges as the police alleged that when they nabbed him, he had ten M16 cartridges in his possession.
The lawmen said that during the arrest, they also seized a Toyota Corolla with more than $200,000 worth of stereo equipment.
According to the police, they found more than $1 million in cash hidden in a speaker box at the deportee’s home in Flagstaff, St James, which they believe is linked to the drug trade. The man, the police alleged, told them that he had found the money in bushes.
“We are of the view that the money has been in connection with…250 pounds of cocaine which was stolen… and so far, two persons have died from this,” deputy superintendent, Derrick “Cowboy” Knight, told the Observer yesterday.
According to Knight, Thursday morning’s seizure is connected with the recent murders of at least two persons in the parish– Rose Hibbert and her boyfriend, popularly known as “Ninja”.
Rose “Pinky” Hibbert, a 34 year-old mother of one and resident of Rose Heights in Montego Bay, was discovered lying in a pool of blood. The police later discovered that she had been shot several times.
At the time, the police could not establish a motive for Hibbert’s murder, but since then, they have theorised that her death was in reprisal for her boyfriend– ‘Ninja”– who was allegedly involved in a foiled drug deal.
Meanwhile, the total firearms seized by the St James police since the start of the year have now reached 50, following yesterday morning’s seizure of a Ruger 9mm pistol which had three live rounds, and a Smith and Weston .38 revolver with four live rounds.
