October 30 election rerun
ELECTORS, whose votes were voided in four polling stations in the Trench Town Division in Kingston, will return to the polls on October 30.
The Electoral Office yesterday set the date for the run in polling stations 39, 40, 41 and 42, which were located at the Maxfield Avenue Seventh-day Adventist Church.
A spokesman for the Electoral Office told the Observer that polling stations were likely to remain at the same venue.
The results of voting at the four stations were voided by the Election Court last month, after the Constituted Authority reported allegations of voter impersonation and the chasing of indoor agents from the stations.
The seat was won by the People’s National Party’s Bonitto Brown, who polled 4,127 votes, to the Jamaica Labour Party’s Maxine Siddo with 881 votes.
Four hundred and fifty-two electors will be eligible to cast their ballots in the election rerun, but the outcome will not reverse the results of the election, which was held on June 19.
However, director of elections, Davnville Walker, said the rerun was important to send a serious message to those who are in the habit of practising election fraud.
Major police operation in MoBay
MORE than 50 police officers were yesterday deployed in Montego Bay, St James, in search of wanted men, who the cops believe are responsible for a recent upsurge of crimes in the western city.
“We’ll be locking down the city… to see if we can get some of the wanted men. Basically, we are making the criminals’ life uneasy… we are taking a zero tolerance approach,” said Deputy Superintendent Derrick “Cowboy” Knight, the crime chief for St James.
“We’re going through all the troubled spots,” he said.
Volatile areas such as Granville, Retirement, Tucker, Flankers, Seaview and Providence Heights were among those targeted.
Up to press time last night more than 100 offensive weapons were seized, five cars seized after the drivers were cited for breaches of the Road Traffic Act, and 100 tickets issued to motorists, also for traffic breaches.
Assistant Commissioner Reginald Grant, Senior Superintendent Donald Pusey and Superintendent Norman Gordon were among senior police officers from Kingston who were involved in the operation.
