Six murders in St Catherine, Kingston
SIX people, including two members of one family, were shot and killed, while two others were shot and injured between Wednesday night and yesterday morning.
The two family members were killed when gunmen invaded the community of New Nursery in Twickenham Park, and shot four members of the Lingard Family, killing 64 year-old Renford “Castro” Lingard and his son Patrick, 37, alias “Callie Man”.
Renford Lingard’s wife, Patricia, who was shot in the head and chest, and his son Sheldon, 20, who received injuries to the chest, arm and abdomen, were taken to hospital where they were admitted.
Residents of New Nursery told the Observer that Mrs Lingard, walked about 800 yards following the shooting after which she was assisted by a police officer who took her to the hospital.
“She walk with the shot in her head and she held up her belly. It was pure blood,” said a teenager who claimed to have seen the injured woman crying as she walked down the dirt lane. “It don’t look like she going to make it,” the teen said of the injured woman.
Patrick Lingard was killed as he rode his bicycle out of New Nursery, a heavily-populated community located behind the fish vending site at Twickenham Park.
The elder Lingard was murdered a few minutes later when the killers went to his home and shot him as he slept. The men entered the yard and ordered a cigarette from Lingard’s wife and as she went to get the cigarette, they went into the humble dwelling and shot the elderly man. The police said he was a witness in a case involving a man from the community.
At the same time, a resident from the community told the Observer that the elder Lingard was at odds with a man in the area over a contract to maintain a canal.
“Look how the two boy dem come kill me father over one little fool fool canal contract,” one of Lingard’s daughter’s said, before falling into the very canal said to be at the root of the dispute.
Two other murders were also reported in St Catherine between Wednesday night and yesterday morning, including that of Jamaica Defence Force corporal, Ralston Edwards, of Greater Portmore.
Edwards’ body was found with gunshot wounds in an open lot in Newlands, a run-down community in Portmore. It appeared that his attackers had relieved him of his licensed firearm as police found a firearm booklet and Edwards’ shoulder holster was empty when cops arrived on the murder scene.
Gunmen also invaded the community of Windsor Meadows, in the Sufferers’ Heights area of St Catherine early yesterday morning and murdered Errol Mandison, also called “Tanny”.
Tanny’s death was said to be as a result of an ongoing gang feud in the Central Village area, which has seen at least four persons being killed in the last two weeks, the police said.
A number of spent shells, including some used in AK47 rifles, were seen on the death scene.
The police reported that a group of heavily-armed men entered Mandison’s one-room house through a window and shot him more than six times.
Meanwhile, Richard “Chips” Phillips, who the police said was wanted for murder, was killed in the Weise Road area of Bull Bay, yesterday morning.
Phillips’ body, the police said, was found with multiple gunshot wounds by residents. A .357 magnum revolver was found beside his body.
According to the police, Phillips was wanted for the gun slaying of Kevin Johns in January last year and Marie Harrison’s murder in 2002.
In the sixth reported killing, a body with several wounds, believed to be inflicted by a cutlass, was fished from the Kingston Harbour, near Highholborn Street yesterday afternoon. The unidentified body is of dark complexion, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and was clad in a dark blue jeans and green and white underpants.
