800 rounds of ammo found at slain gangster’s home
THE Constant Spring police yesterday seized 800 rounds of ammunition from what they described as an upscale St Andrew home believed to be have been rented by slain leader of the One Order gang Oliver “Bubba” Smith.
While the police were searching Smith’s home, CIB detectives questioned JLP MP Olivia “Babsy” Grange for more than three hours at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston about her relationship with the slain gang leader.
Smith, who was killed Monday night, was using a car part-owned by Grange.
Superintendent Assan Thompson declined to give the address of Buba’s house, citing security reasons. “We are not saying at this time where the house is because of the delicacy surrounding the case which we do not want to compromise. As a result, we are withholding the address for the time being. But I can tell you that it is a house in one of the upscale areas of upper St Andrew,” Thompson said.
During the four-hour operation yesterday, police said they found:
. A green Jamaica Labour Party T-shirt with the words “One love Babsy cares” written on the front and “One Order Central St Catherine” on the back;
. Two passports, one bearing Smith’s photo, but with the name ‘Jasimar Peter Wallace’, and the the other issued to Carlene Judy Morgan;
. Rent receipts representing payments for $35,000 and $15,000;
. Several bank books in Morgan’s name;
. A number of Western Union transaction receipts;
. A building plan with architectural drawings for a house at Lluana, St Elizabeth;
. A number of photographs of Smith and Morgan; and
. Immigration cards
The passport with Smith’s photo, issued on July 21, 2003, showed that the holder was denied a visa to London in February, while that for Morgan had stamps showing that she had travelled to Grand Cayman on several occasions. She returned in February this year.
Thompson said the police were searching for Carlene Morgan as it was evident that she was living at Bubba’s home. “We have every intention of pulling out all the stops to track down a number of persons based on our discovery at the home.,” said Thompson.
Yesterday, Grange left the Terra Nova through a side door to avoid reporters
“No charges have been laid against her,” one of the investigators told the Observer after the interrogation ended.
The team of cops who questioned the MP was led by head of the Bureau of Special Investigations, Assistant Commissioner Granville Gauze and included Superintendent Calvin Benjamin of the Area Four police and Sergeant Wayne Joseph of the St Andrew North Police Division.
A few of Grange’s close associates waited patiently outside the hotel until the police had finished questioning the MP, whose name had appeared on the registration documents of the Honda Civic motor car that was being used by the slain gang leader.
Grange has since denied knowing Smith and claimed that she stood as guarantor to secure a loan for one of her constituents, Andrew “Bun Man” Hope, who police say is the second in command of the One Order gang and the man who calls the shots in Ellerslie Pen, an area fiercely loyal to the One Order.
According to the cops, Bun Man is presently on bail on shooting charges and is required to report to the Spanish Town police three times weekly. Members of the now defunct Crime Management Unit accuse Bun Man of shooting at them in January last year.
Yesterday, one of Grange’s female supporters tried in vain to intimidate members of the media into leaving the hotel compound while the MP was being questioned.
