Isiaa Madden has reshaped skylines, revived architectural imagination in Montego Bay, and carried her family’s 90-year legacy of service at Madden’s Funeral Home. But on Saturday, she stood in an arena entirely new to her and walked away a grand-prize winner in the richest horse race in the English-speaking Caribbean.

Madden, a first-time visitor to Caymanas Park, watched in disbelief as her colt, Rideallday, stormed home to capture the US$300,000 Supreme Ventures Mouttet Mile (invitational), a performance she described as “nothing short of epic.”

The American-bred three-year-old grey/roan colt, trained by the legendary Philip Feanny and ridden by internationally acclaimed jockey Javier Castellano, produced a jaw-dropping run in deep stretch to triumph by nine lengths in 1:36.40. His odds of 5-2 made him respectable, but far from the favourite.

Yet, as Madden put it, “Everybody had a little funny feeling about him.”

Moments after the win, Jamaica Observer’s Brian Pitter caught up with the architect-turned-racehorse owner, who radiated equal parts shock and joy.

“Apparently so,” Madden laughed when asked if her victory could signal a shift for women in the sport. “I must admit, this is my first time here at Caymanas Park. And I was asked to join the racing fraternity, and I took a leap, and I’m so glad I did.”

“Rideallday started and then he wasn’t in the race. I really don’t know what happened after that… but when he came around that corner, he was suddenly in the race. It was unbelievable. I don’t even know how long the race was — the adrenaline is still going. It was just nothing short of epic. A lot of fun!”

While many fans are meeting Madden for the first time at the track, her footprint across Jamaica is enormous.

A fourth-generation descendant of the Madden family, she carries the legacy of Madden’s Funeral Home, its cemeteries, crematoriums, and its deeply rooted role in Jamaican life for over 90 years. But Madden is also known globally for her work as one of Jamaica’s most accomplished architects. Her latest and most ambitious project, The Pinnacle, is set to become Jamaica’s tallest residential estate, a four-tower luxury development overlooking the lagoon on the Reading Peninsula.

Her portfolio includes Caribbean mainstays such as RIU, Excellence, Hyatt, Princess, Moon Palace, UNICO 18°77°, Half Moon, and more. Her achievements earned her the Howard University IMPACT Award, recognising professional excellence and community leadership.

Madden is no stranger to male-dominated spaces. For decades, she has been the lone woman on major construction sites, navigating an industry historically closed to women. Now, almost by accident, she finds herself helping to break a barrier in another arena.

A remarkable weekend for racing, and a striking debut as she joins another winners circle. The Mouttet Mile’s massive purse, electrifying crowd, and dramatic finish cemented its status as a marquee regional event.
