Nurse in rape scandal again remanded in custody
JANET Spence, the nurse who is charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice after she allegedly approached a woman who accused a doctor at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital of rape and offered her money to drop the charges, was again remanded in custody yesterday.
She is scheduled to reappear in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court today.
Meanwhile, Matt Myrie, the 31 year-old doctor who has been charged with two counts of rape and two counts of indecent assault, will be brought before the court today to answer the charges.
Dr Myrie, a gynaecologist, has been accused of taking a patient, who had earlier suffered a miscarriage, into the ultrasound room at the maternity hospital and raping her.
The doctor was arrested by the Denham Town police after the woman lodged a complaint to the police.
Spence reportedly offered the alleged rape victim $500,000 to drop the charges against Myrie. The police said the nurse allegedly tried to bribe the victim in a bathroom of the hospital and after her first attempt was spurned she made repeated phone calls to cajole her into accepting the money.
Spence, who is four months pregnant, yesterday appeared worried when she was taken in handcuffs to the court. After she was unshackled, the nurse, dressed in a modest grey outfit, listened silently as her attorney, Carl Mitchell, spoke on her behalf.
“Is the crown opposing bail?” Mitchell asked Resident Magistrate Martin Gayle.
It was then revealed in court that Myrie was scheduled to appear in court today.
“It is obvious that the matters are connected, Mr Mitchell,” RM Gayle said, “She is remanded in custody until tomorrow (today).”
