What’s in the pipeline for Falmouth?
Optimism, especially among government officials, is high regarding Trelawny’s development. Should all the planned developments come to fruition, residents and investors can look forward to a major kick-starting of the economy, with short and long term opportunities, they believe. Following are some of the major projects scheduled to be completed within the next two years:
. North Coast Highway – Completion of the Trelawny leg of the highway – which will bypass the actual town of Falmouth – is expected by the end of 2005
. Hampden Wharf – The US$25-million development of this wharf in Falmouth involves a major commercial/cultural centre with duty-free shopping malls, a marina, a Slave Museum, theatres, restaurants, and a 1,000-seat theatre/concert hall that will serve as the home of the Jamaica Music Revue Children of the Drum, a showcase of the history of Jamaican music from gerreh, ska and rocksteady to mento, reggae and dancehall. It is to be completed by May 2005
. Greenfield Cricket Stadium – Construction of the US$30 million stadium is being undertaken by COMPLANT, the China National Complete Plant Import and Export Corporation Group, under a loan agreement with the government of Jamaica
. Harmony Cove Resort – US$1.1 billion development of a 1,400-acre beachfront five-star resort colony that will comprise four five-star hotels, a convention centre, three golf courses, a 300-slip marina, a private airport, 95,000 square feet of meeting space, over 1,800 square metres of retail, dining and entertainment space, 200 up-scale villas and manor houses on sites ranging from ½ an acre to 5 acres, apartments and condominiums
. The Martha Brae to Harmony Hall Water Supply Project – will see the construction of the pipeline running parallel to the North Coast Highway, providing a regular supply of potable water for the new resort developments and other areas on the coast, freeing the water now pumped to the coast from far inland to be used in agriculture
. Oyster Bay Resort – construction of a 1,700-room luxury development by Spanish hotel chain, Secrets
. Great Houses – Swanswick, Vale Royal, Arcadia, and Hyde Hall – restoration and leasing of the four great houses as part of a local plantation/slavery/ architectural tour
. Overhaul of Falmouth infrastructure – involving a new drainage and sewerage system, construction of a new $300-million police station on Rodney Street, a new fire station, a new courthouse and tax collectorate.
