Million dollar heist
May Pen, Clarendon – One of two men, whom police believe held up and robbed the Zipp Cafeteria and Cambio in May Pen, Clarendon, of more than $1 million yesterday morning, was later found dead in the getaway car.
The man, who was unidentified up to press time last night, was allegedly shot and injured by a security guard as he and his crony escaped with the loot shortly before 10:00 am. As a waiting taxi sped off with the two men, it struck a male pedestrian who was later treated at hospital and released.
According to a police source, a female employee had just returned to the cambio with a bag of cash that would be used for the day’s transactions when the armed men pounced. They ordered her to hand over the bag.
The armed men were challenged by the security guard as they left the cambio, and one of them was hit, the police source said. About 30 minutes after the robbery, the police got a tip that the body of a man had been found in a taxi on the other side of town. Based on descriptions from eyewitnesses, the cops who responded to the call theorise that the abandoned car was the getaway car, and the dead man was one of the hold-up men.
