BRUTAL MURDER
SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland – The body of Enid Gordon, a 15 year-old student of the Petersfield High School, was yesterday found in a shallow grave near her home in Content, a small district in Westmoreland.
Two suspects, the police said, were last night being interrogated about the girl’s murder.
Police say Enid, who was the complainant in a rape case nearly a year ago, was scheduled to appear in the Whithorn RM court next Tuesday, October 18, where the case was scheduled to be mentioned.
However, the police could not say last night if the murder of the teenager was connected to the rape case.
In the meantime, a Kingston family was last night hoping that their little girl, Trudy-Ann Fung, 14, who was abducted Wednesday night, will be returned to her home at Alexander Road. The child’s mother reported that the child was abducted along Maxfield Avenue by a man who dragged her into his motor car.
But while the parents of Trudy-Ann were hoping to see their girl alive, the quiet district of Content in Westmoreland was plunged into mourning following the discovery of Enid’s body.
Police said Enid, who was reported missing Wednesday night, was strangled and then buried in the shallow grave. She was still clad in her school uniform and her necktie tied around her neck. Police said that she had marks consistent with strangulation.
She was found by her father, who was among several family members who had gone in search for her after she did not return home Wednesday night.
According to the police, Enid left home about 9:00 Wednesday morning to visit a relative admitted to the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital. She was instructed by her parents to leave the hospital, then head to school in time for the evening shift.
However, when her parents visited the hospital later that day they learnt that she did not visit her sick relative, causing them to become worried. When they returned home at about 7:30 pm and did not find their daughter there, they became more worried after they were told by the school that she did not attend classes earlier that day.
A search was then launched for the missing teenager. She was found at about 5:30 yesterday morning.
Delroy Gordon, Enid’s older brother, said the grave in which his sister’s body was found was the same location where she was raped.
“My mother came and asked if I saw her and I said no. After that I was at my home and my mom came to me crying and told us the news,” a grieving Gordon said yesterday.
Gordon, 27, who lives about a mile from where his parents live with his two sisters – Sharon and Enid – said that after his little sister went missing he feared the worst.
Enid’s death also brought tears to teachers and students at the Petersfield High School.
The school’s vice-principal, Eugenie Spence, told the Observer that the school community was plunged in a state of trauma following the news of Enid’s death. Some students, she said, had to be given counselling.
“It is a very gloomy situation; some students are agitated, some are sad, some are down. The entire school community is traumatised. Some students, especially the girls, are expressing fear. We prayed with them this afternoon at assembly,” said the vice-principal.
She said that a few teachers and a guidance counsellor went to the Gordons’ home yesterday but they did not find anyone there.
Students at Petersfield remembered Enid as a quiet and humble student and one who always did her work.
Just under four months ago, two little girls, Shanna Kay Legister, nine, and Sheneka Shakes, eight, were found murdered in canefields near their school, a day after they were reported missing on June 30.
