Caretaker gets 10 days for stealing bicycle from police station
A man was yesterday sentenced to 10 days in prison at hard labour after pleading guilty to breaking into the Grants Pen Police Station and stealing a bicycle.
Rohan Sparks, of Grants Pen Drive, Kingston 8, who was also the caretaker for the police station, drew much laughter from presiding magistrate Martin Gayle and other people in the courtroom upon admitting to the offence.
“I was thinking of 10 days (sentence) for him, but it will be like putting him back at work,” Gayle remarked after hearing the allegations of the case.
After considering the offence and the allegations, Gayle then proceeded to sentence Sparks to 10 days’ imprisonment at hard labour.
According to court documents, on August 9, an officer on duty at the Grants Pen Police Station, after being told of the bicycle theft, began reviewing footage from the security cameras installed at the station. The video showed Sparks removing one of the bicycles belonging to a member of the Grants Pen Bicycle Patrol Unit.
Based on this information, the police then went to Sparks’ home where he was arrested and charged and the bicycle recovered.
