Police kill four alleged gunmen in Clarendon
Police sharp-shooters outgunned four men, killing all of them in an alleged firefight at dawn yesterday in the quiet Clarendon district of Alexandria.
And a fifth man was found by police yesterday, his nude body protruding from a culvert in the Rae Town community in Kingston. The man, who was unidentified, was believed to have been killed elsewhere and dumped in that community.
The Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) said only one of the four men killed in Alexandria was identified. They gave his name as Anthony ‘Tremble’ Bennett, of an unspecified address.
Bennett, police said, was wanted in connection with the August 7, 2006 murder of Patrick Mason, a taxi operator from Bucknor.
CCN liaison officer for Clarendon, Constable Odale Mulgrave reported that at about 5:00 am yesterday, a police team carried out a raid in Alexandria in search of four men who were wanted for several major crimes, including murders and shootings.
As they approached the house they were targeting, the police came under severe gunfire, Mulgrave said. The cops fired back and when the shooting subsided, the four men were found.
They were pronounced dead at the Chapelton Hospital.
Police said they recovered three guns and some ammunition from the scene – a .380 semi-automatic pistol with three live rounds; a glock 17 semi-automatic pistol with four live rounds, and a Webley nemesis pistol.
In the case of the nude man, Acting Deputy Superintendent Winston Lawrence of the Mountain View Police Station said near 10:00 am the police were called to the Rae Town community in the vicinity of the Tower Street Correctional Centre, formerly the General Penitentiary.
There they were shown the nude corpse of a man believed to be in his 20s.
An examination of the body revealed what appeared to be gunshot wounds above the right eye and above the right ear. The body is approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall and is of a dark complexion with dark hair.
The police theorised that the person was first murdered then taken to the culvert where the body was dumped somewhere between the hours of 3:00 am and 4:00 am.
The matter is being investigated by the Kingston Eastern Homicide Division and the Major Investigations Branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.
