IDT orders Premix workers back to work
THE Industrial Disputes Tribunal (IDT) yesterday ordered unionised workers of Jamaica Premix Limited in Kingston to resume full duties by 7:00 this morning.
The more than 200 workers, represented by the National Workers Union (NWU), went on strike on July 21 after a breakdown of wage negotiations.
The NWU is seeking increases of 12 per cent and 13 per cent, respectively, while the company is offering 7 per cent in the first year and a further 8 per cent in the second.
The union also wants the company to review the pattern of payment to its drivers.
NWU vice-president Granville Valentine said drivers were paid per trip, but the union wanted them to be paid a basic rate, plus an incentive for each trip.
The union also wants an increase in the current educational fund, to support employees with back-to-school needs.
The strike has halted distribution of premixed cement and aggregates from the company’s plants at Molynes Road and Harbour View, Kingston; Orange Bay, Hanover; May Pen, Clarendon; Portmore, St Catherine; Montego Bay, St James; Pear Tree Grove, St Ann; Yallahs, St Thomas; Agualta Vale, St Mary; and Martha Brae, Trelawny.
