Muschet, Irwin, Grange Hill net double wins at First Chance meet

Three double winners – all from the female section – emerged from Saturday’s County of Cornwall Athletics Association’s (COCAA) First Chance Meet at the Irwin High school.
Shana-Kay Sewell of Muschett High won the Class 3 100m/200m double; Irwin High’s Krystal Haughton won the Class 4 equivalent while Grange Hill High’s Monique Patterson won the Class 1 800m/1500m events.
Twenty-one schools from all five western parishes took part in the meet that was completed on time despite a late start and persistent showers early in the proceedings.
Just a handful of the top names in high school track showed up at the early season meet, the second to be held in western Jamaica since the start of the season.
Sewell won the 100m in 12.8 seconds then returned to win the 200m in 27.5 seconds. Her time in the 100m was the fastest by any female that day.
Haughton’s times over the distance were 13.2 seconds and 28.0 seconds.
Patterson was the only competitor in the Class 1 800m, which she won in 2:38.7 and returned to take the 1500m in 5.40.00 seconds, beating six others to the line.
Mt Alvernia High’s Tovia Jenkins had the fastest 200m time in the female section as she won the Class 2 event with a time of 26.0 seconds.
Frome Technical’s Rushell Clayton ran 59.8 seconds to win the Class 2 girls 400m, beating Herbert Morrison Technical’s Seidetha Palmer- 1:00.0 seconds and Jenkins of Mt Alvernia- 1:01.0 seconds.
In the boys’ section, Herbert Morrison’s Kevin Moore won the Class 1 100m in 10.8 seconds, ahead of STETHS’ Chadic Hines- 11.1 seconds and Kemarley Brown of Green Island- 11.2 seconds.
Grange Hill’s Rojay Thompson won the Class 2 event in 11.0 seconds while three others -Clayton Coates of Rusea’s; Jervan Johnson of Frome Technical and Tafari Green of Petersfield High – were credited with times of 11.1 seconds.
Two STETHS runners, Davion Dennis and Jason Brown topped the Class 3 100m with times of 11.5 seconds and 12.1 seconds respectively.
STETHS runners also topped the Class 4 100m with Okeen Williams and Jeffrey Barnes.
Green Island’s Brown won the Class 1 200m while Coates of Rusea’s won the Class 2 half-lap event ahead of St James High’s Allan Ottey.
The next meet to be hosted by COCAA will be the Field, Distance and Hurdles meet at Cornwall College on January 24, starting at 9:00am.
This meet will see races starting from 800m through 5,000m, a 4x800m relay; field events including long and high jumps, shot put, discus and javelin as well as hurdles events from 70m to 400m.
