Dr Nelson Chris Stokes to be honoured by Team Jamaica Bickle
KINGSTON, Jamaica—Four-time Olympian and president of the Jamaica Bobsleigh Federation, Dr Nelson Christian Stokes, will be among the honorees at Sunday’s “Black Tie Gowns & Sneakers” 3.1 Labor of Love Gala Fundraising Luncheon at the Crest Hollow Country Club, Woodbury, New York, being hosted by Team Jamaica Bickle (TJB).
The event will double as a fundraiser for Team Jamaica Bickle’s annual hosting of the Jamaican high schools and college teams that are expected to participate at the 129th staging of the Penn Relays Carnival to be held at Franklin Field, Philadelphia, April 24-26.
Stokes, who participated in four Winter Olympics between 1988 and 1998, in two-man and four- man bobsled events, sits on several influential International Olympic Committee (IOC) panels.
According to a release from TJB, the event will be held “Under the patronage of Jamaica’s Consul General to New York, the Hon Alsion Wilson, OD, and Stokes, will receive the TJB Pioneer Athletics and Exemplary Leader in Sport Award.”
The guest speaker is Sandra Brunson, chairperson of Second Round Foundation, a diligent supporter whose mission is aligned with the work of TJB.
The release also pointed out, “since 1994, TJB founder and CEO Irwine Clare Sr, OD, has steadily led the 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organisation as a sound volunteer entity providing a wide range of services in the development and care of the athletes and coaches at the Penn Relays through our Hospitality Initiative Program that provides meals, physical therapy, chiropractic care, mentorship, medical services and ground transportation, as well as being forefront in negotiating subsidised hotel rates for the athletes and coaches.
“Under our theme, Celebrating Our Athletes, Our Ambassadors, the mission and subsequent work by this body of Diasporans have lived up to our commitment since the iconic collaborations with Vincent HoSang’s Caribbean Food Delights and the affiliated Team Jamaica Bickle, Philadelphia Chapter, in a truck, then a tent and now in the Palestra on the grounds of the University of Pennsylvania,” the release also said.
