Like father, like son
CLIFTON, St Elizabeth
Family members and friends of 18-year-old High Grade 11, Lewisville High School student, Oshane Brown can’t understand why the normally jovial youth chose to follow in his father’s footsteps by committing suicide last week.
“I did not see this coming. No, no, no because Oshane was doing work experience at Brompton at a furniture place. Him say ‘Momma me don’t know if it is because the machine me using, me don’t know if it make me whole body feel weak.
And him also complain of severe backache. Me say to him maybe it is the machine that shake up your nerve so don’t go this week, stay off until next week,” explained his maternal grandmother, Lola Lewis.
Oshane’s body was found dangling from a rope tied to a tree on the same premises where his father’s corpse was found swinging over a decade ago.
Oshane, who was two years old at the time was orphaned four years later when his mother died of natural causes . Since that time he and his older sister, Shanick have lived with Lewis.
The grief-stricken grandmother recalled getting the news about her grandson while on a trip to Kendal last Sunday. She said her husband had been tending goats when he made the startling discovery.
“He went downhill to move the goat when he saw Oshane in the tree. He called Oshane but he just ignore him and don’t pay him any mind. So him go down further when he got nearer he realised something was wrong,” Lewis recalled.
She also recounted that just before leaving for her excursion she inquired of her grandson how he was feeling.
“Him say ‘Momma me feel all right’ so me say later and him say ‘all right’. Me couldn’t know say Oshane a go commit suicide,” she said.
According to Lewis who told the Observer West that she shared a close relationship with both grandchildren, Oshane was an ardent football fan, who loved to attire himself in trendy outfits.
“He was boastful, him no dress any and anyhow. I can’t describe how me feel because me and Oshane and his sister we just live close,”
But she couldn’t understand why he didn’t want her to take him to the doctor.
“When me say you know me ago take you to doctor him say Mama what doctor a go say? I will soon be all right. Just leave me until me all right,” recounted Lewis who is now seeking assistance to bury her grandson.
