STETHS girls set CARIFTA records
St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) students – Peter-gay Reid and Rochelle Farquharson – were in record-breaking form at last weekend’s 38th CARIFTA games held in St Lucia.
The duo helped Jamaica win their 25th straight title while piling up a massive 67 medals, including 39 gold, 15 silver and 13 bronze at the four-day meet that ended Monday.
Their wins followed closely behind victories in Class Two in their respective events at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Girls Champs held the previous weekend.
Reid retained her under-17 high jump title with a personal best and meet record 1.80m, beating Barbadian Akela Jones after both girls failed three times to clear 1.82m.
They tied the record held by another Jamaican, Sheree Francis, who set the mark in 1999.
Another Jamaican, Janieve Russell, of Holmwood Technical was third with 1.77m.
Farquharson, who also won at western champs in February, broke the five year-old meet record of 12.53m set by Jamaican Kimberley Williams with a new mark of 12.61m.
She set the mark on her first attempt to improve on her third place finish last year.
Former Mt Alvernia High student Yushanni Durrant won two bronze medals in the under-20 long and triple jumps.
Meanwhile Munro College’s Adam Cummings led off the record breaking boys’ under 17 4x100m relay that took home the gold in 40.76 seconds, breaking the 40.87 seconds mark held since 2000 by a Trinidad and Tobago squad.
Frome Technical’s Andre Moodie was also fifth in the Under 20 Boys’ 800m in a personal best 1:54.97 seconds.
