St James High warned
MONTEGO BAY, St James – Jarrett Park, the home venue for daCosta Cup champions St James High, has been put on one year’s probation by the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) following a Disciplinary Committee meeting held in Ocho Rios last week.
The ruling came after a hearing into missile-throwing incidents that marred the first-round Zone A daCosta Cup game between St James High and Cornwall College on October 1.
Despite the sanction, ISSA’s president, Dr Walton Small told the Observer West on Tuesday that they were “satisfied with security measures put in by St James High for the game against Cornwall that day”.
The game was stopped on at least three occasions as irate fans threw missiles including bottles and cans onto the field in protest against rulings by referee Valdin Ledgister.
Meanwhile, Dr Small is warning that if the practice persists then serious actions could be taken, including teams being suspended from playing.
Small renewed his appeal to fans to respect the decisions of the referees and said teams could be forced to find alternate venues to play games, play games without spectators, or as a last resort, teams could be suspended.
He reminded fans that under FIFA rules, home teams were responsible for their fans’ behaviour.
