Police promise faster recovery of stolen motor vehicles
THE public can expect speedier investigations into cases of stolen motor vehicles this year as the Flying Squad plans to add more than a dozen forensic investigators to that unit.
“We plan to increase the number of forensic investigators probing stolen motor cars. The aim is to make the turnaround time in investigations much shorter. What we would take a week to do, we want to take a day,” head of the unit Superintendent Cornwall ‘Bigga’ Ford promised Tuesday.
“We want to intensify the forensic investigation in such a way that it is islandwide,” he added, explaining that the unit will be partnering more with the Police Traffic Division to conduct investigations this year.
While Ford declined to divulge a specific date for the addition, he said he is looking to increase the number of forensic investigators to at least three times the six he has currently working in the unit.
Last year, the Flying Squad recovered more than 95 stolen motor vehicles, valuing more than $87 million. They also recovered motor vehicle parts totalling more than $10 million.
Four hundred and thirty-seven persons, including 25 women, were arrested and charged.
