Cavine Reid is Miss Beaches Sandy Bay
Cavine Reid on Saturday trumped a field of nine competitors at the Kool Runnings Waterpark in Negril to become the first Miss Beaches Sandy Bay.
The competition which saw representatives from various departments of the resort displaying their various talents, opened with a satirical look at the evolution of women from pre-historic caveman club-wielding times, to the present-day BlackBerry-bearing business executive.
The Harmony Dancers brought a Las Vegas feel to the occasion with showgirl-style feather and plume headgear, while
Cameal Davis of Rising Stars fame set the audience — especially the male members — on fire with her performance which was made all the more memorable when she invited a little girl on stage to sing along with her. The youngster — Abigail — proved to be a real crowd pleaser, almost upstaging Cameal! Also appearing as a special performer was the smooth-voiced Timmi Burrell, but surprisingly this promising artist did not generate many sparks with this audience.
During the talent segment the contestants did their best to impress the panel of judges which included Miss Jamaica World 2006 Sarah Lawrence; broadcaster Janice Walters and general manager of Royal Plantation Peter Fraser. Reid was awarded Most Talented for her Street vendor dramatisation.
The popular House of Style assembled a trendy and suitable collection of clothing and accessories to match the contestants’ body types and personalities.
Other sectional awards were won by Annakaye Weller — Most Congenial, and Sachareen Rickettes for Best Stage Deportment. As the excitement mounted toward the climactic announcement of the top three, placard-bearing supporters waved their banners as Kimesha Jolly of the Human Resources department was announced third; Monifa Henry of the Entertainment department, second, and Reid of the Kids Camp department, first. The hotel’s General Manager, Brian Sang, presented the main prize to the new queen, bringing down the curtains on a successful first staging of the Ms Beaches Sandy Bay Talent and Awareness Competition.
