Munro, ‘Herbert’, STETHS impress at Grace Kennedy Invitational
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Munro College, Herbert Morrison High and hosts St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) all scored several impressive wins at last Saturday’s 26th staging of the GraceKennedy STETHS Invitational that was held at the STETHS Sports Complex in Santa Cruz, St Elizabeth.
Munro College, the reigning County of Cornwall Athletics Association’s (COCAA) Western Boys’ Champions, led the way with six wins while Herbert Morrison and STETHS had five wins each.
Munro ended the meet on a high by winning the High school boys’ 4x400m relay in near darkness in 3 minutes 20.71 seconds.
JodiRae Blackwood took first place in the 400mH Open in 55.77 seconds; Jevaughn Shaw won the Class 2 Discus- 47.72m.
Delano Williams was the winner of the Class 2 200m in 22.08 seconds which was the fastest time of the day, while Giovanni Mowatt won the Class 1 1500m- 4 minutes 13.60 seconds.
The triple jump Open went to Myles Chingara who landed at 13.40m.
Herbert Morrison’s win came from Fitzroy Harris in the boys’ Class 1 400m in 50.89 seconds beating McKoy Simms of STETHS- 50.99 seconds.
Tevaskie Lewin who is back to full health after an injury-plagued 2009 season won the Class 1 long jump with 6.41m with one attempt.
Defending champion Dexter McKenzie of Munro did not compete as his name was left off the entry list.
Herbert Morrison jumpers won the Classes 1 and 2 high jump as Demar Wood had his first big win of the season when he took the Class 1 high jump, clearing the bar at 1.90m to beat Munro’s Wendrico Seymore- 1.85m.
Triwayne Blake took the Class 2 event with 1.65m, beating his teammate Hakeem Woods- 1.62m, while Munro’s Kemar Sutherland completed the medals with 1.59m.
Antonique Campbell gave Herbert Morrison its only win in the girls’ section when she took the Class 1 400m in 57.77 seconds.
STETHS’ Rochelle Farquharson and Opal James won the Class 1 and Class 2 long jump events respectively.
Farquharson, the CARIFTA Games and Penn Relays champion, won with 5.91m while James had a best effort of 5.71m.
Carla Rowe won the Class 4 400m in 1minute 02.27 seconds, beating teammate Moesha Campbell’s 1minute 02.61 seconds.
STETHS also swept the Boys’ Class 2 and 3 400m, with Demar Levy taking Class 2 in 50.64 seconds ahead of Herbert Morrison’s Odayne Vernon, 51.70 seconds, and Frome Technical’s Jerval Johnson- 52.08 seconds.
Dwayne Gardiner won the Class 3 one-lap race in 54.62 seconds, beating Rushane Anderson of Grange Hill- 56.86 seconds.
Frome Technical’s Stephanie Barrett continued her good season by winning the Class 2 1500m in 5minutes 03.00 seconds.
