GaGa does McQueen
Show-stopping: Lady Gaga drew attention to herself in a flamboyantwhite tiered gown and towering wig at the Brit Awards in London lastnight
Lifestyle, Local Lifestyle, Tuesday Style
February 17, 2010

GaGa does McQueen

She was the first to arrive — and certainly left a lasting impression.

But onlookers were left stunned and unsure of what to make of Lady Gaga’s entrance at the Brit Awards.

The singer appeared on the red carpet sporting a white, tiered dress with a white pompadour wig that would make even Amy Winehouse’s beehive appear tame.

And while Gaga left more to the imagination than usual, the towering ensemble was arguably, even by her standards, one of her most bizarre fashion choices ever. Ensuring all eyes were on the Bad Romance singer as she sashayed into Earls Court, it was anyone’s guess as to who exactly inspired the singer’s fashion choice. The outfit was

reminiscent of several iconic figures, including Pierrot, the melancholic clown-like mime character and 18th Century French Queen Marie Antoinette. Perhaps the 23-year-old’s look — part angel, part mental health patient — was a nod to Alexander McQueen.

Halston CCO for SPJ

For years Sarah Jessica Parker (SJP) has been a fixture at New York Fashion Week, admiring the clothes on offer.

But this time the 44-year-old has more than a passing interest. Newly named chief creative officer (CCO) and president of US label Halston, the Sex And The City star was hard at work.

She wore a bronze tunic over black cigarette trousers from the label’s autumn/winter 2010 collection, paired with tribal wedges.

And as she arrived Sarah Jessica also modelled a sequinned winter coat, worn over the top.

The collection was designed by London-based Mario Schwab, who was appointed by the label last year. Perhaps he has been giving SJP some tips.

She will soon be designing the brand’s lower-priced Halston Heritage collection.

The luxury label is owned by Jimmy Choo boss Tamara Mellon and fellow investor, Miramax boss Harvey Weinstein.

But despite its prestigious investors Halston struggled to find its own identity after being taken over in 2007 by private equity fund Hilco Consumer Capital.

However, the new range has won positive reviews, with the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) hailing its ‘hustle into the future’.

“It is Mr Schwab who gets the credit for Halston’s modern Fall 2010 collection,” said the WSJ.

“It featured sculpted, draped dresses in luxurious fabrics, slit-front suede boots, and liquid-like gowns in a mix of neutrals and eye-popping crimson and aubergine.”

Richie gets a ring?

After three years together and two children, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden are tying the knot.

The socialite, 28, confirmed she was engaged to the Good Charlotte frontman, 30, when she appeared on the Late Show With David Letterman on Tuesday night. Arriving at the Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York City, a beaming Richie flashed her large diamond engagement ring to photographers.

Lily Allen Wins A Brit

Lily Allen finally collected her first Brit Award last night as Lady Gaga emerged as the biggest winner with three gongs to her name.

Other success stories were JLS, who won British Breakthrough Act and British Single, indie band Kasabian who won British Group and Florence and the Machine who took British Album.

Collecting her award, wearing an orange wig, a tipsy Lily, who opened the show with her number one single The Fear, said: “Wow, oh my god.”

Then beginning to giggle, she continued: “I only wore this orange wig because I thought I would make it more difficult for the cameramen to find me and catch my disappointed face.”

But as host Peter Kay attempted to hurry her up by sounding a horn, Lily told him: “%&@* off, I’m not leaving. %&$* you.”
