Holland High School’s athletic programme receives financial boost from Glastonbury

TRELAWNY, Jamaica — Meat supplier Glastonbury provided an undisclosed sum towards boosting the athletics programme at the Holland High School in Trelawny, on Monday.

The announcement was made by Hugh Gentles, the custos of Trelawny and chief executive officer (CEO) of the company.

Glastonbury is a supplier of meats, fish, ground produce, grains and frozen items to businesses across Jamaica.

The presentation was made during a welcome ceremony on Monday for the school’s star athlete Shanoya Douglas, who copped two gold medals-Class One Girls 100 and 200 metres respectively- at the recent staging of the   ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championship at the National Stadium.

“We have taken a decision at the company to support the athletic programme at Holland High,” Gentles announced.

“Next year when I come back after Champs, it won’t be just one athlete that will be up here, it will be at least five,” he predicted.

He lauded the coaches and academic staff for the “dedication and training” they have provided to the school’s track and field team.

“Your dedication has played a critical role in nurturing the talent and potential that exists within the student body. And Shanoya’s success is a reflection of your care and commitment,” he said.

Added Gentles, “Today, we celebrate you, not just for your medals, important as those are, but for your courage and your drive to push beyond boundaries. You have shown us all what it means to strive for excellence, and in doing so, you have inspired your peers to dream even bigger and harder.”

“I also want to congratulate the entire team that went to Champs. I’m sure you have all worked hard and gave of your best. And I encourage you to continue to support each other and celebrate each other’s achievements. I want you to keep the spirit of unity that I’m feeling here today at Holland High burning brightly. Do not lose the spirit. Keep it going. Build on it,” he stressed.
