A couple weeks ago I showed you how to make your own crib bedding. To accomplish exactly what I wanted I used the pillow cases of a brand new sheet set to get the perfect accent colour green I was looking for, but in the end I was left without pillow cases for the sheet set, and this is for the bed that is to be in the room with the crib. So looking at the scraps of pillow case, a couple yards of the piping cord and quite a bit of the white fabric left over that I used for the bedding set… the solution was simple: I could make a new pair of pillow cases for the sheet set that will coordinate with the crib set.

The crib set is primarily white with green accents and trimmed with navy and white piping cord, so the same could be true of the pillow cases. King-sized pillow cases measure 20 inches wide by 42 inches long and usually have a 4-inch band at the top with some piping detail, if you are making standard-size cases, just measure those dimensions. I had three-quarters of one pillow case left so that would be enough to create the band at the top of the cases, so you will need to:

* Cut (2) 41-inch by 39-inch pieces of the main fabric (white in my case)

* Cut (2) 41-inch by 9-inch strips of the accent fabric (green in my case)

* Cut (2) lengths of piping cord measuring 41 inches each

You will then:

* Fold and press the accent fabric in half lengthwise, creating a 41 X 4 1/2-inch band.

* Layer the 41-inch lengths of the main fabric, piping cord and accent fabric, right sides facing and all edges together and pin in place and then stitch securely.

* Fold the case in half lengthwise and stitch shut the side and bottom

* Turn right side out and dress your bed.

As easy as that the problem is solved with not a scrap of waste. Talk about tun yuh han’ mek fashion!

Sheet sets are great to make all sorts of things, accent cushions, curtains, etc, just don’t let any of it go to waste. Keep your eyes open for good buys and have fun with this and good luck.
