NBA Player Profile – Brandon Roy

Name: Brandon Roy

Team: Portland Trailblazers

Position: Shooting Guard

NBA Statistics: 19.8 (points), 5.1 (assists), 4.6 (rebounds)

Background: Diligent, patient and an aspiring perfectionist are just some of the attributes that can be used to describe Brandon ‘The Natural’ Roy. Drafted as the sixth overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2006, Roy had the opportunity to be drafted directly from high school in 2002 but chose to withdraw his name.

Growing in strength, Roy was rewarded for his hard work with the Pacific-10 Player of the Year. Though drafted by the Timberwolves, Roy was simultaneously traded to the Portland Trailblazers and repaid them for their open arms by claiming 16.8 points, 4.4 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game on quest to being named the 2006-2007 NBA Rookie of the Year. He only played 57 games for the season, but his performances were of such a calibre that he received an amazing 127 votes from 128 in that year’s vote.

In his second season, injury took its toll, but he still made valuable contributions when he played, including leading his team to a 13-game winning streak. He had a record 19.1 points and 5.8 assists during that season to earn a reserve spot in the Western Conference All Star line-up and he has managed to force himself into the All Star line-up ever since.

While being renowned for his scoring, Brandon Roy is among an elite class of players to have recorded 10 plus steals in a single game which he achieved last December.
