Humble Lion, Arnett end in 0-0 draw
EFFORTVILLE, Clarendon — The dream of playing in the top-six of the Digicel Premier League when the fourth and final round begins went up in smoke for Humble Lion and Arnett Gardens’ who drew 0-0 at Effortville Community Centre yesterday.
The point means the teams are now four points shy of the top six — sharing eighth place on 36 points apiece.
Only Village United, who moved to 40 points with a 2-1 win over Harbour View, Rivoli United (37) and August Town (34), who were playing Tivoli Gardens and Waterhouse in late games, can now play in the top six.
Wayne Fairclaugh, coach of Arnett Gardens, acknowledged that the draw was a setback, but he was nonetheless satisfied with the point.
“A point is a point and if we had lost it wouldn’t be good for us at all… getting a point is better than none,” Fairclaugh said.
His opposite number Linval Wilson implied that the Flow Knockout semi-final against St Georges last Sunday may have taken a toll on his players.
“I think we never played the way we wanted… I don’t know if the game we had on Sunday had anything to do with it,” said Wilson, Humble Lion’s assistant coach.
Humble Lion, who were brimming with confidence after their Flow Champions Cup final berth, dominated the first half, but had nothing to show as Roberto Fletcher and Zico Herrera were denied by goalkeeper Julian McLeish and the right upright towards the end of the half.
And had it not been for discarded national goalkeeper Shawn Sawyers, who continues to show what he’s worth, pulling off a number of important saves in the second half, Humble Lion might have been licking their wounds.
Arnett Gardens started the second stanza a renewed team, but Kevin King and company met strong opposition from Sawyers, who denied them with three brilliant saves.
