Village grab big win over H’View
FALMOUTH, Trelawny — Village United’s bid for the safety of a top-six position in the Digicel Premier League was boosted after scoring a hard-fought 2-1 win over 10-man Harbour View in a third-round match at Elliston Wakeland Centre yesterday.
This was the Trelawny club’s second straight win over the east Kingston outfit, which piloted them to 40 points with a game to left to be played in the third round.
Dino Williams, who scored the lone goal in the second round win at Harbour View, gave Village the lead after just 19 minutes and Delroy Ellis added another in the 83rd before substitute André Fagan handed the visitors a lifeline two minute later.
Harbour View, who were bidding to reclaim the lead from Tivoli Gardens, finished a man short as midfielder Jermaine Hue was sent off in the 81st by referee Dwight Royal for stepping on a Village player who was on the ground.
Village’s coach Cassman Williams was happy for the results and told reporters he hoped the teams’ fighting spirit and enthusiasm will carry over to Sunday’s game against St Georges in Portland.
Williams said they needed the points and the intention from the start was to take all three “and the early goal helped”, but added that after scoring the second goal, the team dropped their guard.
It was Harbour View who had the first real chance, but Rafiek Thomas’s shot from just outside the area in the third minute beat goalkeeper Ryan Cooper, but came back off the right upright.
Williams, who scored for Village in their 1-1 draw against Arnett Gardens, got his fifth goal of the season in the 19th when he headed home a corner moments after returning to the field after being treated for an injury.
He should gave added a second goal three minutes later after being sent through, but a well-timed tackle by Montrose Phinn just inside the area averted the danger for Harbour View.
