The love of ‘more’
HEBREWS 13:5: “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have because God has said, never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.” The average family today devotes more than half of its spendable income to outstanding debts. Almost 60 per cent of us spend more than 100 per cent of our disposable income on trying to manage debt. The fact is that most of us are living way above our means!
We are no longer just competing with the “Joneses” but with Hollywood and television celebrities. We are continually focused on the things we want which are not necessarily the things we need. If we are not careful we could very easily get caught in a spin entitled “The love of more.” Jesus said in Luke 12:15: “Beware of covetousness, for a man’s life consists not of the abundance of the things which he possesses.” True success is not measured by one’s position, job title or salary scale, but by a job well done.
Globally, greed has now grown to epidemic proportions and has become an obsession to many. We disguise greed as ambition and declare that it is essential for our happiness and well-being. It is important to note, however, that it is not money that is the root of all evil, but it is the love of money that is! The endless pursuit of “the love of more” can lead only to corruption, anxiety, stress and turmoil. Proverbs 15:16 tells us: “It is better to have little with fear for the Lord than to have great treasures with turmoil.” Nothing is enough for the man to whom enough is too little (Epicurus).
Eternal Father, teach us as a nation to be content with what we have, knowing that You are our provider, the God who is more than enough. We are comforted with Your promise that You will never leave us nor forsake us. Thank You for providing us with all we need for life and godliness.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen
