Andrew Riley lands 110m hurdles at LSU Alumni Gold meet
Calabar High past student Andrew Riley, a sophomore of the University of Illinois, Champaign, clocked a personal best 13.53 seconds to win the 110m hurdles at the LSU Alumni Gold meet at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana at the weekend.
Riley, 21, has the second fastest time in the NCAA Division One this season after resetting his own school record of 13.74 seconds established last year May at the Mideast Regional Championships. He defeated American Ryan Fontenot by one hundredth of a second (13.54sec), and Jason Richardson, also of US, third in 13.55 seconds.
In the 100m, Jamaica’s Samantha Henry of LSU won in 11.34 seconds, comfortably ahead of Americans Chasidee Lewis-Baker, 11.53sec, and Kristina Davis, 11.57sec.
Clora Williams, who finished eighth at the National Championship last year, won the 400m in a time of 52.80 seconds, beating American LaJada Baldwin, 52.98sec and Swede Sofie Persson, who ran a personal best 53.41sec.
Melissa Ogbourne clinched the triple jump with a distance of 12.74 metres.
Olympic 200m bronze medallist Kerron Stewart ran 22.57 seconds to win the half-lap event at the Auburn War Eagle Invitational in Alabama. The 26-year-old Stewart outsprinted Bahamians Nivea Smith, 23.08sec, and Christine Amertil, 23.13sec.
Dwight Mullings finished second in the 400m in a season-best 45.48sec, trailing American Tavaris Tate, who won in 45.21sec, with Delorean Peek, also of USA, third in a personal best 46.47 seconds.
National long jump champion Jovanee Jarrett won her pet event in a season-best 6.55 metres, ahead of Bahamian Bianca Stuart, 6.43m, and American Shaunta Hamilton, 5.89m.
Kingston College past student Keiron Stewart of Texas University won the 110m hurdles in a wind-aided (3.4m/s) 13.60 seconds, ahead of American Andrew Pennington, 14.50sec, and also won the 400m hurdles timing 51.81 seconds at Arkansas v Texas meet.
Alain Bailey, also a Kingston College past student, now at the University of Arkansas, won the long jump in a season-best 7.99 metres.
Meanwhile, Vere Technical past student Kimberly Williams of Florida State University snatched her third consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) outdoor triple jump title when she registered 13.47 metres at Clemson University, South Carolina.
Williams made the winning mark on her first jump, beating Portuguese Patricia Mamona, 13.30 metres, and Jamaican Deandra Doyley of the University of Miami.
At the Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Jamaica’s Wilbert Walker, the 2008 NCAA Division II indoor and outdoor champion, captured the triple jump in a wind-aided (2.6m/s) 16.38 metres.
Compatriot Francine Simpson, 20, measured 6.16 metres for second in the long jump won by American Bettie Wade in a wind-aided 6.29 metres (2.7m/s).
Another Jamaican, Anna-Kay Campbell, was second in the heptathlon in a wind-aided 5,245 points, as Australian Megan Wheatley won with 5,323 points.
