Local cricket leagues stumped by social unrest
The Super Cricket League and the Senior Cup competitions have been postponed due to the current upsurge of violence across the island. In a release on Thursday, the Jamaica Cricket Association stated that the ongoing civil unrest that resulted in the Government imposing a limited State Of Public Emergency, forced the decision to postpone these competitions until further notice.
“Due to the ongoing social unrest, all local cricket matches under the aegis of the Jamaica Cricket Association that were scheduled for this weekend, have been postponed until further notice,” the release stated.
Both competitions are normally scheduled as two day contests on Saturdays and Sundays boast some of the most talented cricketers in the country.
Cricket Operations Officer, Oneil Cruickshank confirmed that indeed, all JCA-run club matches are off this weekend.
“Because of what is happening and the (security) uncertainties in the country, the JCA thought it best to take precautions. We always have to keep in mind the safety of the players, officials and all other persons involved,” he said.
Cruickshank pointed out that the postponement has not affected the JCA financially and added that they should still be able to complete both competitions within the scheduled time because the cancellation of the Jamaica leg of South Africa’s tour of the West Indies has created openings on the local calender.
“So far I don’t see the postponement affecting us seriously. There has been no adverse impact on the competition financially or otherwise. Because South Africa is no longer coming here the local competitions will still be able to be completed on time,” he added.
The Jamaican leg was shifted to Trinidad following the ongoing violence which started late last week. Sabina Park was set to host the final One Day International, a warm-up match and the first Test starting on June 10, but those matches are now likely to be held at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad.
