Russia, Paul Island in semi-final clash
FROME, Westmoreland — Two-time beaten finalists Russia FC and Paul Island FC will meet this afternoon at Frome Sports Complex in the first-leg semi-final of the Westmorland Captain’s Bakery Major League.
Russia, who lost in the last two finals, will be seeking to make it to their third straight final after finishing fourth overall, taking the last semi-final spot on goal difference ahead of Roaring River as the preliminary rounds came to an end last week.
Meanwhile, Western Confederation Super League champions Reno will meet a Westmoreland All-Star aggregation in a 1:30 pm game as they continue their preparation for the Premier League qualifying series.
The series was put on hold because of the ongoing unrest in Kingston after Reno had won their first two games.
In the Major League, promoted Extra Flexx, who had a perfect third round, winning all six games, topped the standings with 39 points. End-of-first-round champions Paul Island were second with 35 points, Mt Grace were third with 31 and Russia, who edged Roaring River, had 30 points.
Russia and Paul Island will be meeting for the third time this season after Russia won the second end-of-round final, then drew 1-1 in the third round.
The return-round will be played on Thursday as part of a double-header.
The second semi-final between Extra Flexx and Mt Grace will be played on Monday at the same venue and Mt Grace will be seeking their second win over last season’s Division One champions.
Mt Grace won the first-round game 1-0, while the second-round game ended 2-2.
In the second-leg semi-finals on Thursday, Mt Grace and Extra Flexx will meet in the first game at 1:30 pm before Paul Island take on Russia.
Meanwhile, three teams — Central Westmoreland Athletic Club, Chantilly and Dunbar’s River — were relegated to Division One after finishing at the bottom of the table.
