Sav Hawks tackle Flames in basketball finale
MONTEGO BAY, St James — The first trophy of the Western Basketball Association’s Division One league will be up for grabs this evening as Sav Hawks of Westmoreland and Central Flames of Hanover meet in the mid-season final at the Montego Bay Cricket Club Courts, starting at 6:30.
Both teams were among four that finished the first round on 10 points each, but had the better goal differential to advance to the play-off.
Despite forfeiting one game, Hawks had the best goal-difference of 60. Flames were next with 53, one more than Montego Bay Cricket Club Knights’ 52, while Hopewell Vipers had 50.
Sav Hawks will go in to the game with the psychological advantage after beating Flames 70-65 in a regular season and were unbeaten in the five games played after being forced to forfeit one against Granville Wolfpack.
Flames will come into the gamed with a more potent scoring lineup, having scored 407 points, the second highest behind Knights, but Hawks have the best defence, giving up just 283 points thanks in part to 16 blocked shots by the veteran Maurice Rodriques, second most to Knights’ Peter Michael Reid, who has 30.
The Flames attack will be led by the competition’s top scorer Craig Dorman, who has 113, Julian Walker, who has 68, and Sheldon Myrie, 62.
Kenneth Blackwood, who had a season-high 30 points in Hawks’ win over Hopewell Vipers, will be the key player if the Westmoreland club is to win.
Blackwood leads Hawks with 103 total points, followed by Richard Chambers’ 86 and Rodriques’ 52.
