Morton captains Queen’s Park to fourth Sunday League title
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — Out-of-favour West Indies batsman Runako Morton skippered Queen’s Park to the Sunday League Limited Overs title when they beat Central Sports in the final of the tournament on Saturday.
Sent in to bat, Queen’s Park tallied a disappointing 173 all out off 39.5 overs but splendid captaincy from Morton saw Central Sports limited to 152 all out off 38 overs, as the home team won by 21 runs at the Oval.
It was the fourth title for Queen’s Park after they tasted success in the inaugural year in 1994 and then also won in1997 and 2007.
In a contest reduced to 40 overs a-side because of rain, promising all-rounder Kevon Cooper led the way for Queen’s Park with 36 off 35 balls.
He was supported by former T&T, Jamaica and West Indies hard-hitting batsman Ricardo Powell who made 24, while Morton got just 13 before being dismissed.
Seventeen year-old off-spinner Arshad Mohammed, in his first match at the Queen’s Park Oval, was the pick of the bowlers with five for 37 while Andre Browne bagged two for 41.
In reply, the Central team could not sustain the solid start laid by St Lucian opening batsman Keddy Lesporis who made 36 with three fours, and folded short of their target.
The innings was undermined by spin twins Sunil Narine (3-23) and Amit Jaggernauth (3-26) who captured three wickets apiece while Cooper chipped in with two for 28.
