Harbour View edge Barracuda FC 1-0
Antigua’s Barracuda FC were beaten for the third game in a row as Jamaican champions Harbour View recorded a 1-0 win on Sunday at the Antigua Recreation Ground.
John-Ross Edwards capitalised on a couple of defensive blunders to ram home after 25 minutes as the home side failed to capitalise on some early chances and also had a goal ruled off-side.
Ranjae Christian, the converted striker, delightfully headed home a cross, but his celebrations were short-lived by the linesman’s flag and when Christian brilliantly controlled another with his chest and volleyed, everyone thought the ball was in the back of the net, but it cannoned off the side-netting instead.
Barracuda, the country’s first professional club, are playing a series of friendly matches ahead of their debut in the United Soccer League next year as the United States programme expands into the Caribbean.
Before an evenly-mixed crowd of Antiguans and Jamaicans, the game got off a lively start with the home side pressing to take an early advantage, but some good saves by the Harbour View goalkeeper and otherwise poor shooting let down the Barracudas.
And, as it turned out, Edwards pounced when Molvin James needlessly raced off his line and was beaten by the goalscorer, and when Karanja Mack’s attempted bicycle-clearance rebounded to him, the Jamaican made sure from close range.
The second-half ebbed and flowed as both teams came close, but neither was able to find the back of the net.
