USA vs Australia: A friendly indeed
IRENE, South Africa (AP) — After 3 1/2 years of getting ready, the United States’ final dress rehearsal comes today in a friendly against Australia.
Forward Jozy Altidore could miss the Australia match in a refurbished stadium in a western suburb of Johannesburg after spraining his right ankle during training Wednesday. Altidore sat out yesterday’s practice session.
Clint Dempsey could be pushed up to forward, which would leave Stuart Holden, DaMarcus Beasley or Benny Feilhaber to start in midfield with Landon Donovan — who spent three months at Everton last season with US goalkeeper Tim Howard and Aussie midfielder Tim Cahill. The other forward candidates are Robbie Findley, Edson Buddle and Herculez Gomez.
The US open against England on June 12.
