Fraser, Spencer set new meet records
RABAT, Morocco (CMC) — Shelly-Ann Fraser and training partner Kaliese Spencer set new Championship records at an IAAF World Challenge meet on Sunday.
The 23-year-old Fraser, the women Olympic and world champion, had things all her way with a number of big names, like American Carmelita Jeter, not attending the meet.
The Jamaican sprint darling clocked a modest 11.13 seconds to prevail over the veteran Bahamian Chandra Sturrup by one hundredth-of-a-second in the 100 dash.
Schillonie Calvert, another Jamaican, finished fifth with a time of 11.48.
Jamaican Spencer, a fourth-place finisher at the World Championships in Berlin last year, covered the field in the 400 hurdles in 54.89 secs to set a personal season’s best time.
Jermaine Gonzales, another Jamaican, ran 45.06 to win the men’s 400 ahead of Bahamian Chris Brown, whose time was 45.32.
Michael Mathieu, another Bahamian, finished fourth in 45.45 — behind Britain’s Martin Rooney.
Steve Mullings, a finalist at last year’s World Championships, was second in 20.75, behind American Wallace Spearmon, whose 20.35 was good enough for victory.
Another Jamaican, Trecia Smith’s best measurement was 13.57 metres, which left her seventh in the women’s triple jump, won by Russian Anna Pyatykh with a distance of 14.68m.
