Black Eyed Peas and sultry Shakira kick off World Cup concert

Black Eyed Peas and sultry Shakira kick off World Cup concert

With the world’s football teams poised to thrash it out on the field, Black Eyed Peas frontwoman Fergie set the battlefield tone as she emerged in a gladiator-style outfit for the official World Cup kick-off concert on Thursday. Fergie was joined on stage by her band-mates to kick off the concert with their chart-topping hit Where is the love?

Other stars on the line-up included Alicia Keys, R Kelly, Angelique Kidjo, Vusi Mahlasela and Shakira, who performed the closing set with some of her most well known tracks and the World Cup song Waka Waka (This Time For Africa). Children and the elderly alike waved South African flags and sang Shosholoza, the popular local tune sung mostly at soccer matches.

The scene in the 30,000-capacity stadium was reminiscent of 1995, when South Africa, recently free from decades of apartheid rule, won the rugby World Cup. The tournament was widely seen as uniting a country long divided along racial lines.

South African President Jacob Zuma and FIFA President Sepp Blatter also joined in on the party in Johannesburg’s Soweto Township, calling for unity for the duration of the World Cup. Net proceeds from the concert will go to FIFA’s official social campaign for the World Cup, which is aimed at achieving positive change in Africa through football. The campaign aims to build 20 centres across the continent offering health-care services, education and soccer training for disadvantaged communities.

Kelly Rowland squeezes into eye-popping jumpsuit for a night on the town with P Diddy

Just one wrong move could have left Kelly Rowland feeling very embarrassed, but the singer avoided any unfortunate wardrobe malfunctions as she partied in London with fellow star P Diddy on Thursday night.

The former Destiny’s Child star showed off her newly svelte figure into a strapless, sparkly outfit and a pair of peep-toe heels, as she dined in the capital at Nobu before hitting up the Whisky Mist nightclub with P Diddy.

She has recently lost 10lb after giving up sugar, and revealed that: “I didn’t even try to lose weight. I read this book, called You Are What You Eat. The author [Gillian McKeith] is talking about sugar, she’s talking about meat, she’s talking about cheese. I did some of those things for a month, but for the most part, it is just sugar that is gone from my diet.”

P Diddy is currently in London promoting his album Last Train to Paris, with his new band Diddy Dirty Money.

Lady Gaga wears studded bikini to baseball match

Jeans and a T-shirt would have sufficed, but that’s just not Lady GaGa’s style. The singer wore a studded leather bikini and matching head scarf as she watched the San Diego Padres take on the New York Mets in New York on Thursday night.

The singer was watching the game with friends at Citi Field in the Flushing neighbourhood of Queens. They were dressed in jeans and T-shirts, highlighting her unusual clothes. Perhaps her consistently over-the-top stage outfits have desensitised her to the weirdness of her wardrobe.

Despite her eye-catching ensemble it appeared that GaGa had hoped she would somehow blend into the crowd. On noticing a sports photographer turn her way, her good mood soured and she gave him the finger.

It’s not unusual for GaGa, 24, to dress inappropriately. Just this week she stole the show from her little sister Natali by arriving for her High School graduation wearing a black conical hat draped in a long lace scarf. Her flamboyant lace outfit certainly overshadowed her sister’s mortar board.

Going tribal: Shakira was backed by an army of colourfully dressed dancers
Flying the South African flag: It is the first time such a concert has been held to mark the opening of the world’s biggest sporting tournament
Walking tall: Kelly Rowland just about managed to contain her curves in a gravity-defying jump suit while out in London Thursday night.
Leave me alone: Despite her outfit suggesting otherwise, GaGa did not seem to enjoy the attention her inappropriate attire attracted.
She eventually put on a leather jacket.
