Russia advance to Western Confed Super League
FROME, Westmoreland — Russia FC will play in the Western Confederation Super League next season after beating Mt Grace 3-2 on aggregate to win the Westmoreland Football Association’s Captain’s Bakery Major League that ended last Sunday at the Frome Sports Complex.
After playing to a 2-2 draw in the first leg, Russia who lost in the last two finals to Grange Hill and Petersfield, won the return leg 1-0 thanks to a second-half goal from Kemar Dawkins in the 73rd minute.
Russia will also take home the winners’ trophy along with the $100,000 first prize while Mt Grace will get $70,000.
Beaten semi-finalists Extra Flexx and Paul Island were declared third and fourth-place winners.
Russia is the first of four teams that will be promoted to the Super League as the winners of the four parish leagues in the confederation will replace the four that were demoted at the end of the last season.
In the first leg, Mt Grace had played with 10 men for the last 35 minutes but came from behind twice to earn the 2-2 draw.
Dwayne Blake who had scored Mt Grace’s first equaliser in the 15th minute was later sent off by referee Albert White in the 65th minute after he got his second yellow card of the game.
Blake fell in the goal area during an attacking move and was adjudged to have committed a simulation, diving.
Despite this however the large turnout was treated to a good game between two teams that rose to the occasion.
Russia who are taking part in their third straight final got off to a fast start and took the lead in the first minute through Donald Hewitt junior.
Blake equalised in the 15th minute but Kemar Dawkins struck in the 35th minute to restore Russia’s lead.
After going down to 10 men in the 65th, Mt Grace go the vital equaliser in time added on when Kavel Blake struck.
