Ghana resilient; South Korea unlucky
Yesterday was a wonderful day for Ghana — the only African team remaining in the tournament and they’re now through to the final eight.
They put on a great performance, starting well by going one up after only five minutes, but then the USA equalised and for a period it looked like there was only going to be one winner — the USA.
But Ghana showed their resilience and great determination and scored a fantastic goal in the first few minutes of extra time. I personally felt that the USA would not win as they tend not to play so well when they have the favourites tag — their style of play and mentality is best suited when they are underdogs. Many thought that the USA were going to beat Ghana easily and, when that is the expectation, the USA tend to get overconfident — people were even saying yesterday that they thought the USA would go all the way to win the World Cup.
I think it’s great for the tournament that Ghana are still there representing Africa — but, aside from that, they thoroughly deserved to get this far and have great opportunity ahead of them to go even further.
Ghana will face Uruguay in the quarter final which is probably the slightly better side of the draw to be in. In the other section, there are the traditional strong nations such as England, Germany, Argentina and Spain.
South Korea were unlucky when they were beaten by Uruguay. South Korea actually had the better chances and again they played with very good structure and were well organised. They showed that — even without necessarily having the best players — you can do well, so it was unfortunate for them.
Uruguay had to rely on a superb strike from striker, Luis Suarez, who scored one of the best goals of the tournament so far with a beautiful curling shot from the left side of the penalty area. South Korea did have a chance to take it to extra time and probably should have scored through substitute Lee Dong-Gook but it was not to be.
So Uruguay now face Ghana which I think will be an evenly balanced match — it’s also a good opportunity for both sides as neither are in the top 10 in the world and, for whomever goes through to the semi-finals, it will be a really wonderful achievement.
